A crime scene investigation performance audit is a critical review and evaluation of the crime scene investigation process that was conducted under the authority of a legally sanctioned investigative entity, or its designee, in order to compare that crime scene investigation performance to recognized and well-established crime scene investigation guidelines

   These
crime scene investigation guidelines have been established by authority, custom, or general consent as models or examples of expected performance. The focal areas for the crime scene investigation performance audit are the five “Ps”:

Policies - a review and evaluation of departmental policies on conducting crime scene investigations;

Procedures - an evaluation of the crime scene investigation procedures employed;

Personnel - an evaluation the qualifications of crime scene investigation personnel;

Performance - an evaluation of adherence to the crime scene investigation procedures employed;

Product - an evaluation of the types of evidence collected and the methods by which they have been collected.
